About the Performer/Instructor:

In the tradition of Woody Guthrie, Holly Near, and Sweet Honey in the Rock, social-justice songwriter Crys Matthews blends Americana, folk, jazz, blues, bluegrass and funk into a bold, complex performance steeped in traditional melodies and punctuated by honest, original lyrics.

Performing professionally since 2010, Matthews came to national prominence in 2017 by winning the New Song Music and Performance Competition at the Lincoln Center. This year, the title track of her latest album, “Changemakers,” won Song of the Year at the International Folk Music Awards.

 Press:

In the great tradition of folk music, Matthews brings listeners in with sweet sounds that grab them by the heart, and just as they are cradled in her soulful voice and her deft handling of an acoustic guitar it’s as if Matthews says, “Now that you’re here, we’ve got some things to talk about.” Pride Source

“While each and every day, on each and every media platform, we’re reminded of the division, alienation, marginalization, and divisiveness rampant in our country (and our world), we’re not often enough met with people like Matthews who exist as reminders of what beauty can occur when we bridge those divides.” Bluegrass Situation

“A passionate and powerful blend of infectious Americana melodies and folky instrumentation, Matthews delivers her honest songwriting through a beautifully raw and unfiltered lens. Oozing soul, her voice bleeds with emotion and gratitude, while simple piano melodies and upbeat percussion fill you with appreciation and love for the people around us who fight for change.”—Ear Milk
