Are you interested in sewing so you can make your own clothes?  

Woven fabric is more stable than knit fabric which makes it easier for beginning sewists to use.  In this class we will use quilt weight cotton to sew a pull over top and pair of pants/shorts with patterns customized to each student.  Students will be measured and will learn how to use a pattern generating program to create a bespoke paper pattern, which they will be able to take home with them.

Skills focus for this class:

• Accurately measuring the body for pattern sizing

• Sewing with accurate seam allowances

• Top stitching

• Creating a folded hem

• Stitch selection 

• Using fusible interfacing

• Sewing facings

• Pinning and using paper patterns

• Making a casing

• Threading elastic through a casing

• Creating patch pockets and inseam pockets

• Accurately measuring the body for garments

Sewing machines and materials will be provided. (Students are welcome to purchase their own material if they prefer.  Yardage will be provided the first day of class.)

This class will move quickly through sewing machine basics.  If students are wholly unfamiliar with the sewing machine, we recommend starting with the Sewing Machine Basics class.  

Students should be 11-18* years old.  (*18 year olds who have not yet graduated high school)

Class size is limited to 6 students.  (Please sign up for class even if it is full as there is a waitlist and we will be able to contact you in the event of an opening, or, if there is enough interest we may be able to offer an additional session.)

*This class, which would normally cost $115, is being offered for FREE to LCPS students through the City of Las Cruces ARPA funds.  LCPS student ID numbers (also known as student’s lunch numbers) will be required to register.
