Learning how to sew quilts is a great way to practice your sewing skills, and this class has the added benefit of serving members of our community who need a little more warmth and comfort in their lives!  Working as a team, we will design and create quilts to be distributed by another local non-profit agency.  Students will have the opportunity to rotate through multiple workstations so all can experience each of the stages of quilt making.

Participants are encouraged to sign up for multiple sessions!

Students in this class will learn:

  • Basics of how to use the sewing machine
  • How to improve seam allowance accuracy
  • How to prepare and cut fabric for quilt piecing
  • Crazy patch and string piecing techniques
  • How to make and apply bias binding

Some experience with a sewing machine is helpful, but not required. Closed toe shoes are required.

All material will be provided.

This class will overlap with our adult Charitable Crafting group as a deliberate way to foster community connections.  Adults who are interested in this same content are encouraged to sign up for Charitable Crafting.

Students should be at least 9 years old and need to be attending a Title 1 school in Las Cruces to qualify. Separate enrollments are necessary for each participant.

If younger students wish to participate, they may do so with their adult (dad, mom, grandparents, etc.).  The adult must also complete a separate registration for adult Charitable Crafting on the same day.

These classes are very popular, if you are unable to attend after registering, please inform Sandy so she can open the spot to someone on the waitlist! She can be reached at s.smith@crucescreatives.org
