Learn simple approaches for making biochar—a naturally occurring nanotechnology that hosts beneficial soil microbes and increases soils’ ability to absorb and retain water—using techniques as low-tech as a trench.

 

Trainer: Rachael Ryan, NMED certified biochar producer

 

Workshop tasks: Make and quench biochar using a variety of simple techniques, from trench burning to smothered pile

 

Meal: Provided by the Corner Kitchen, with vegan and gluten-free options available

 

General Agenda:

13:00-13:30: Introductions to each other and biochar processes

13:30-17:30: Bioreactor production using several simple techniques, such as trench and smothered pile

17:30-18:00: Q&A

18:00-19:30: Dinner, followed by informal socializing


Safety: 

This workshop is contingent on weather conditions and may be rescheduled if conditions aren't suitable for making biochar. 


Wear close-fitting clothing (ideally fire resistant)

Wear closed-toed shoes (ideally boots)

Tie back long hair
