At this free field day, get hands on practice with simple and effective ways to create biochar!

Biochar—a naturally occurring nanotechnology—supports beneficial soil microbes, enhances soil fertility, and increases water retention, making it a valuable tool for sustainable gardening and farming.

This field day is not just about learning—it’s about making a real impact. By repurposing organic waste from the grounds of the Unitarian Universalist Church--which is working to turn parts of its two-acre campus into a sustainable urban farm--we’ll turn what would otherwise be discarded into a useful resource for growing healthy crops. Whether you’re a gardener, farmer, or simply interested in sustainable practices, this event will provide valuable insights into the benefits of biochar and how to produce it with accessible, low-tech methods.

After the workshop, a free meal will be provided for all attendees, with vegan and gluten-free options available. 

General Agenda:

• 8:30 AM-9:00 AM: Introductions to each other and biochar processes
• 9:00 AM-11:00 AM: Bioreactor production using several simple techniques, such as trench and modified 55-gallon drums
• 11:00 AM-11:30 AM: Q&A
• 11:30 AM- 12:30 PM: Lunch and socializing

• This workshop is contingent on weather conditions and may be rescheduled if conditions aren't suitable for making biochar.
