Youth Beginning Sewing Machine (3rd Grade +)

This class is for those students who have no, or very little, experience with a sewing machine. Students will learn the basics of threading and using a sewing machine while making a pillowcase, flat tote bag, character pillow stuffie and hair scrunchies.  Focus will be on getting students familiar with the machine so they can practice at home and/or be ready for “Level Up” sewing classes.

Skills learned will include:

• How to thread the upper thread 

• How to wind a bobbin

• How to change bobbins

• Basic sewing machine vocabulary 

• Basic mechanics of how a sewing machine works

• How to cut out fabric using a paper pattern

• How to sight scissor placement for accurate cuts

• What seam allowance is

• How to sew accurate seam allowances

• Where to use  decorative, construction, and zig zag stitches

• How and when to use pins and clips 

All materials will be provided.

Students need to be attending a Title 1 school in Las Cruces to enroll.

Thanks to Funding from the City of Las Cruces and the American Rescue Plan Act we are able to offer these camps free of cost to all Title One students who attend schools in Las Cruces. These schools include all of the Las Cruces Public Schools, White Sands Schools, Mesilla Valley Leadership Academy, Arrowhead Park, Alma d'Arte, J Paul Taylor Academy, La Academia Dolores Huerta, Los Montanas, New America, Raices Del Saber.
